According to the 2019 Military Strength Ranking, the nation’s PowerIndex (PwrIndx) score was 0.3988, making it 23rd overall in the world, and second in the Southeast Asian region.
In 2017’s GFP list, the country was ranked 16th in the world with a PwrIndx score of 0.3672 while the nation earned a PwrIndx score of 0.4098, placing it at 20th in the world and second in Southeast Asia.
This result indicates that although Vietnam’s PwrIndx score has increased, the country still dropped in the GFP rankings due to the rise of other countries.
This year, Indonesia was ranked first in the Southeast Asian region with a PwrIndx of 0.2804.
Thailand found itself below Vietnam with a PwrIndx score of 0.4302, followed by Myanmar in 37th place with a PwrIndx score of 0.6162, and Malaysia in 41st place with a PwrIndx score of 0.6523.
Worldwide, Taiwan (China) was placed above Vietnam with a PwrIndx score of 0.3956 whilst Canada and Portugal were ranked 21st and 20th with a PwrIndx score of 0.3941 and 0.3921, respectively.
The United States topped the list with a PwrIndx score of 0.0615. Russia and China finished in second and third with a PwrIndx score of 0.0639 and 0.0673, respectively.
According to the GFP, the finalised ranking calculates 50 individual factors in order to determine a nation’s PwrIndx score.
This therefore allows smaller, more technologically-advanced nations to compete with larger, lesser-developed ones.
