In January 2025, Vietnam earned 99.3 million USD from cassava exports. Despite declines in both export quantity and value, Vietnam still maintained its position as the world’s second largest cassava exporter.
According to preliminary statistics from the General Department of Vietnam Customs, in January 2025, Vietnam exported more than 295,000 tonnes of cassava and products made from cassava worth over 99.3 million USD, a slight decrease of 1.3% in volume and a decrease of 9.3% in value compared to December 2024. Compared to the same period in 2024, the export volume and value decreased sharply by 29.6% and 48.9%, respectively.
Regarding export markets, China, Taiwan (China) and the Philippines are the 3 markets importing the most cassava from Vietnam.
In January 2025, Vietnam exported more than 295,000 tonnes of cassava and cassava products worth over 99.3 million USD
As for China, Vietnam exported more than 281,000 tonnes in January, worth more than 92 million USD, down 29% in volume and 49% in value year on year, accounting for 95% of the total output.
The Taiwanese (China) market ranked second with nearly 4,000 tonnes, worth more than 1.4 million USD, down 23% in volume and 46% in value year on year. The export price also dropped by 30%, equivalent to 382 USD/tonne.
Exports to the Philippines reached more than 2,800 tonnes, worth more than 1.1 million USD, up sharply by 175% in volume and 124% in value. However, the export price only reached 396 USD/tonne, down 19% compared to the same period last year.
Currently, Vietnam is the second largest cassava exporter in the world after Thailand and for the past 5 years, the export turnover has reached over 1 billion USD.
Gia Lai Province is the largest cassava growing area in the country. In 2024, this province had about 78,600 hectares of cassava, with a yield of 185.4 quintals/ha. In 2025, factories aim to produce cassava starch of about 245,000 tonnes (an increase of 8.3% compared to the estimated productivity in 2024).
Next, Tay Ninh province has a total cassava area of over 62,000 hectares; with the average yield of 33.2 tonnes/ha, the highest in the country. The province has 64 cassava processing factories in operation (accounting for 45.8% of the country), including 8 factories producing starch and modified flour, and 2 factories producing malt.
Currently, the total cassava area nationwide is over 511,000 hectares (2024), a decline of about 60,000 hectares compared to 2015. The total cassava output nationwide is 10.4 million tonnes, with the average yield of 20.4 tonnes/ha.
There are more than 40 cassava growing provinces across the country, concentrated in 5 key regions: Northern Midland and Mountainous, North Central, South Central Coastal, Central Highlands and Southeastern regions, accounting for 98% of the country’s cassava area and output.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, the country currently has over 140 cassava starch processing factories, with a total designated capacity of 13.4 million tonnes of fresh cassava tubers/year, and a total actual capacity of 9.3 million tonnes/year.
To support the cassava sector, in 2024, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development approved the Project “Sustainable development of the cassava sector to 2030 with vision to 2050.” The target is that by 2030 the country’s fresh cassava output will have reached about 11.5 to 12.5 million tonnes, of which the output of fresh cassava used for deep processing of some products (starch, ethanol, MSG...) accounts for about 85%; the cassava growing area using standard quality varieties will have reached 40-50%; and the export turnover of cassava and cassava products will have reached 1.8 to 2.0 billion USD. |
