Enhancing the value of bronze featherback

Nature has bestowed upon the Mekong Delta many precious products, including bronze featherback, a freshwater fish with a long, flat body, firm meat and a sweet, nutritious taste. To commercialize and enhance the value of bronze featherback cakes, a specialty of Can Tho City, in 2015, Mr. Pham Trong Nghia decided to start a business with only nearly 20 employees and a 50-square meter production facility. Its first product lines created a new wave for the domestic market at that time. However, at first, the products were quite simple, largely made from bronze featherback, and available only in fish cakes and whole spiced fish, thus failing to meet the market demand. The bronze featherback products were mainly made and distributed in urban districts of Can Tho City. Regarding the supermarket channel, Pham Nghia bronze featherback was only brought to Metro supermarkets and no products were exported. In addition, the company also faced many other market risks and challenges, including price competition from traditional markets and long-standing bronze featherback fish cake brands, a new brand to customers, and difficulties in packaging images, designs and market approach. The company realized that, to be well received by customers, products needed to be perfected in all aspects: From input quality, processing and production to promotion and distribution expansion.

2017 marked a milestone in the long development journey of bronze featherback. Pham Nghia Food was officially founded with more than 10,000 square meters of self-contained factories and nearly 200 employees, capable of processing tens of tons a day. Always trying to upgrade with modern manufacturing technology and equipment, Pham Nghia was proud to have a HACCP-standard safe food supply chain in 2018 and obtain ISO 22000:2018 certificate which has been maintained.

While modernizing equipment, Pham Nghia Food has maintained the quality of supply sources. The company boldly invested in developing farming areas that met VietGAP and GlobalGAP standards to form a close production process from farm to fork. To date, the company’s products in over 100 lineups have reached most of the major supermarket chains nationwide like AEON, CO.OP, GO and LOTTE Mart, distributors in 63 provinces and cities and foreign markets like the United States, Canada, Australia, South Korea, Japan and Sweden.

Bringing hometown specialties to international friends

Director Nghia said, for Pham Nghia Food, bronze featherback is not simply a dish or a product but a dream of bringing hometown specialties to international friends.

After the success with impressive boneless bronze featherback and fish cakes, in early 2023, Pham Nghia Food officially launched the Mon Viet (Vietnamese Dishes) product line, marking a milestone in the journey of preserving and developing pure Vietnamese dishes from local simple ingredients. Since it determined the target for convenient Vietnamese dishes, including traditional Southern specialties, Pham Nghia Food has devoted itself to research and testing because this is truly a big game: Turning the dream of proudly bringing Vietnamese dishes all over the world into reality. The Mon Viet collection includes authentic Southern dishes, such as braised fish, soup, traditional cakes, bread, vermicelli and pho which are all rustic delicious dishes, very popular in Vietnamese meals. The unique point of Mon Viet is its convenience. The products are pre-processed and canned, needing just a few simple steps to heat up and enjoy a delicious, nutritious meal. Immediately after its launch, Mon Viet was favored and trusted by domestic and foreign diners. In the US market, positive feedback from overseas Vietnamese about the products shows that the path Pham Nghia Food chose has produced its first sweet fruits.

Focus on building corporate culture

“In order for corporate culture to create values, at Pham Nghia Food, leaders always share to help employees understand and feel the vision, mission and core values of the company so that they can act properly. Only when they trust and understand the meaning of their work as well as the expectations of the company will they perform voluntarily instead of feeling forced to follow the regulations. At that time, corporate culture will be an operating and promoting tool for the company. The above core values have created Pham Nghia Food - a united, strong and constantly developing team in the past, in the present and in the future,” he said.

The company’s employees are always dedicated and enthusiastic to provide customers with a wide range of convenient, premium products that carry the most typical indigenous characteristics. Pham Nghia Food's culture is to respect human values. The company has truly become a warm home because the camaraderie between colleagues has grown into a family-like relationship. This is one of the factors of success that the company has achieved. In particular, Pham Nghia Food’s mission is bringing value to society through its business activities: Providing safe and quality foods for consumers, contributing value to the country, and combining social responsibility practices. In the past years, Pham Nghia Food has participated in many social activities with specific programs like building charitable houses, hosting Mid-Autumn Festivals for children and providing fresh water for people suffering from drought and salinity.
