India backs VN and ASEAN’s East Sea positions

India advocates the positions of Viet Nam and ASEAN on maintaining peace and stability, ensuring security, safety and freedom of navigation and overflights in the East Sea.

 Indian Vice President Muppavarapu Naidu reiterated the point at his meeting with Vietnamese counterpart Dang Thi Ngoc Thinh on the sidelines of the 18th Non-Aligned Movement Summit in Baku, Azerbaijan on October 25.

 

Vice President Naidu also affirmed that his country supports the resolution of disputes through peaceful measures on the basis of international law, especially the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.

Highly valuing Viet Nam’s role in the region, Naidu affirmed Viet Nam is an important partner in India’s Act East Policy, expressing his wish to further strengthen the strategic partnership with Viet Nam.

Meanwhile, Vice State President Thinh showed her pleasure at the strong growth of the Viet Nam-India relations, especially since the two countries elevated the ties to strategic partnership in September 2016.

She suggested both sides double efforts to lift up the two-way trade value to US$15 billion by 2020.

Welcoming Indi Go, an Indian low-cost carrier, to have opened its first air route from Kolkata to Ha Noi from October 3, Thinh asked the Indian side to continue fostering aviation connectivity and creating more favorable conditions for Vietnamese airlines in India.

She also welcomed Indian investors to have poured investment capital in such fields like energy, infrastructure development, high-tech agriculture, and oil and gas in Viet Nam.

The Vietnamese leader asked the two sides to further strengthen coordination at multilateral forums, particularly the United Nations, Non-Aligned Movement and ASEAN-India cooperative mechanisms./.
