The airport is set to meet the International Civil Aviation Organization's (ICAO) 4E standards. Airports built to ICAO 4E standards are designed to accommodate large wide-body aircraft such as the Boeing 777, Boeing 787 Dreamliner, Airbus A330, and Airbus A350.
It will remain a military-civil airport, occupying roughly 806.62 hectare in Hoa Cuong and An Khe wards.
During 2021-2030, the airport will handle about 100,000 tons of cargo annually and will be able to accommodate wide-body aircraft such as Boeing 747, Boeing 787 and Airbus A350.

Its two existing runways will be retained through 2030 and the 2050 outlook, while a rapid-exit taxiway and two connecting taxiways will be added to improve operational efficiency and reduce runway occupancy time
Its apron will be expanded southward to increase the total number of stands to about 52 to meet future demand.
A new air traffic control tower covering about 4,000 square meters will be built in the northern part of the airport.
Terminal T1 will be expanded southward to raise capacity to about 14 million passengers annually, while Terminal T2, dedicated to international traffic, will be upgraded to handle around 6 million passengers a year.
A 2.46-hectare cargo terminal is planned in the northern zone, with capacity of 100,000 tons annually by 2030, rising to about 330,000 tons by 2050.
The plan also includes other aviation service facilities, including a 1.32-hectare aircraft maintenance and repair area and an in-flight catering facility of about 6,200 square meters.
Following its merger with Quang Nam province last July, Danang now has two airports: Danang International Airport and Chu Lai Airport.
In 2025, Danang International Airport handled 15.1 million passengers and 41,561 tons of cargo.
An International Financial Center is taking shape in Danang.
