Recently, Vice Chairman of the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI) Nguyen Quang Vinh had a meeting and worked with Mr. Lindsay Mark Lewis, Executive Director of the American Progressive Policy Institute, on prospects and solutions to strengthen Vietnam-US trade and investment relations in the new context.
The two sides emphasized the importance of bilateral economic cooperation, including removing tariff barriers.
Mr. Lindsay Mark Lewis said that the 20% tax rate that Vietnamese goods are currently subject to is much higher than that of neighboring countries, although Vietnam has shown goodwill in negotiating with the Trump administration.
Mr. Lewis also noted that the US court's rulings expected in September - October could significantly change the Trump administration's tax policy. According to him, in the coming time, Vietnam needs to continue to maintain technical dialogue between Vietnamese and US authorities to provide data, information and official views.
At the same time, take advantage of meetings at international forums such as the United Nations General Assembly in New York to promote bilateral contacts and lobbying.
On the other hand, Mr. Lewis suggested that VCCI continue to proactively share information with US corporations and US business associations such as AmCham... on strong reforms in the investment environment, such as streamlining the administrative apparatus, promoting the development of the private sector to strengthen confidence and create more motivation for US businesses to increase investment in Vietnam.
Currently, Vietnam has committed to importing soybeans, fertilizers and other agricultural products from the US, so Mr. Lewis recommended that Vietnam continue to maintain and expand cooperation in the agricultural and food sector, especially with major agricultural producing states in the US, to receive direct support from influential Senators.
Listening to the recommendations from the Executive Director of the American Progressive Policy Institute, Vice President of VCCI Nguyen Quang Vinh expressed regret that Vietnam was subject to higher tariffs than some neighboring countries. He affirmed that Vietnam wishes to continue negotiating to reduce this tariff, and emphasized that dialogues need to continue in the coming time on all channels.

The VCCI Vice Chairman added that VCCI is also actively working with US partners to continuously promote imports from the US, from Boeing aircraft, high-tech goods to agricultural products, in order to narrow the trade deficit.
The VCCI Vice President especially emphasized that VCCI is currently maintaining a close cooperation mechanism with the US Chamber of Commerce, the American Chamber of Commerce (AmCham) and foreign business associations through the Vietnam Business Forum (VBF) to create a platform for regular dialogue.
Looking to the future, VCCI Vice Chairman Nguyen Quang Vinh expects President Trump to officially visit Vietnam in 2027 when Vietnam hosts APEC for the third time. This will be an important occasion to not only strengthen political relations, but also strengthen cooperation between the two countries' private sectors.
In addition, the Vice Chairman of VCCI also shared the Government's determination to streamline the apparatus, measures to cut administrative procedures, and improve the operational efficiency of central and local governments. Notably, the Politburo's issuance of Resolution No. 68-NQ/TW has demonstrated the policy of promoting strong private economic development. At the same time, this is also an important milestone for Vietnam's private economy to make a breakthrough.
According to Mr. Vinh, these changes are expected to help Vietnam become more competitive and attractive in the eyes of international investors.
The Vice Chairman of VCCI pledged that VCCI is always ready to cooperate, provide information and support US partners; at the same time, it is a solid bridge for businesses of the two countries to understand each other better, find solutions to overcome trade barriers and maximize the potential of bilateral cooperation.
