The Trong Dong (Bronze Drum) Stadium is set to be the centerpiece of Zone B within the 10,000ha Olympic sports urban area.
Zone B will cover more than 3,118 hectares across Thuong Tin, Tam Hung, Thuong Phuc, and Dan Hoa communes, with an expected population of 186,760.
Apart from Dong Son Stadium, the zone will feature large-scale facilities including the Global Aquatic Arena, which is expected to become an icon of eco-friendly and high-tech architecture.
The Olympic sports urban area is planned across 11 communes in southern Hanoi, divided into four main functional zones (A, B, C, D). The project’s preliminary investment is estimated at VND925.65 trillion ($35.19 billion), with a projected population of 751,000.
It is envisioned as a modern, integrated sports-city complex, enabling Hanoi to host major regional and international sporting events such as the Asian Games and Olympic Games.
The project is scheduled to break ground on December 19, according to a decision approved by the Hanoi Party Committee at a meeting on Sunday.
On December 9, the Thuong Tin commune People’s Committee issued a notice on collecting feedback from relevant agencies, organizations, individuals, and the local community on the 1/500-scale detailed planning scheme for Zone B.
The notice follows a document Vingroup sent to local authorities a day earlier, asking for coordination in opinion collection.
Accordingly, the feedback collection period will begin on December 9, running for at least 20 days and no more than 30 days, with all responses scheduled to be compiled by December 30.
International Olympic Committee data shows that the Rungrado 1st of May Stadium in Pyongyang, North Korea, is the world’s largest by capacity, seating 150,000. Opened in 1989, it was renovated in 2014.
In Vietnam, the largest stadium currently remains My Dinh Stadium in Hanoi, with around 40,000 seats. Previously, Can Tho Stadium in the Mekong Delta held the record, accommodating over 50,000 before renovations reduced its capacity to about 30,000.
In October, construction began on PVF Stadium in Hung Yen province, northern Vietnam, designed to hold 60,000 spectators on a 5.5-hectare site. The stadium, set to become the country’s most technologically advanced sports venue, is developed by the Ministry of Public Security with Vinhomes JSC, a subsidiary of Vingroup, as the main contractor.
