Amkor Technology is looking to further invest in its major production base in Vietnam's northern province of Bac Ninh, underscoring growing confidence in the country’s role in the semiconductor supply chain.
During a working visit to Incheon last Friday, officials from Bac Ninh met with senior executives of Amkor, including CEO Lee Jin An and leaders of its Vietnam operations, to discuss ongoing projects and future expansion plans.
Amkor, a leading global provider of semiconductor packaging and testing services, has been scaling up its presence in Vietnam amid broader efforts by chipmakers to diversify manufacturing bases and build more resilient supply chains.
The company inaugurated its first semiconductor facility in Vietnam in October 2023 with an initial investment of $529 million. Less than a year later, authorities approved an expansion that lifted total registered capital to $1.6 billion, making it the largest semiconductor plant in the country.

The faster-than-planned capital increase reflects the group’s confidence in Bac Ninh’s industrial infrastructure, workforce quality, and long-term growth prospects.
Amkor will continue to mull additional investment opportunities to expand production capacity in the province, he added.
Bac Ninh officials pledged continued support, including facilitating infrastructure, administrative procedures and workforce development, while encouraging the company to deepen technology transfer and help Vietnamese firms integrate more closely into global semiconductor supply chains.
Bac Ninh, a neighbor of Hanoi, is emerging as an industrial hub in northern Vietnam, together with Hanoi, Hai Phong city, and Thai Nguyen province.
