The 25-year-old man was fined for violating coronavirus control measures and disrupting public order, police of Da Kao Ward, District 1, stated Thursday.

Previously on Tuesday, the man was riding a bicycle on Nguyen Thi Minh Khai Street when police stopped him. He then pulled down his mask and shouted at the police officers. As he refused to cooperate, he was taken to a police station. He later tested negative for the coronavirus.

According to police, the man said he knew of the social distancing order not allowing people to go out after 6 p.m., but said he had felt too "cramped."

Ho Chi Minh City, current epicenter of Vietnam's fourth coronavirus wave, has recorded 159,917 local Covid-19 cases in the new outbreak so far. The southern city has undergone a series of social distancing periods to curb the spread of the virus, with the latest extended until at least Sept. 15.

The city has also banned residents from going out between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m., except for medical emergencies, etc.
