Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc met with Speaker of the Union Assembly of Myanmar T. Khun Myat on December 17 as part of his official visit to the country from December 16 -18 at the invitation of President U Win Myint.

During the meeting, Khun Myat lauded Vietnam’s reform achievements, which has turned Vietnam into one of the fastest growing economies in the region. He said his nation hopes Vietnam will share its experience in economic development as the country now is in the reform process.

He also expressed joy at the increasingly strengthened friendship and fruitful cooperation between the two nations in a wide range of fields through all channels, including parliamentary one, including a trip to Vietnam by the Myanmar parliament’s leader in 2017 and a visit to Myanmar by National Assembly Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan in 2016.

Both sides have enhanced closer cooperation at multilateral and regional parliamentary forums, especially the Inter-Parliamentary Union and the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA). The countries’ friendship parliamentary groups and legislators have also actively participated in exchanges and experience sharing, Khun Myat told his guest.

He also thanked Vietnam for supporting Myanmar at international forums, including the United Nations, ASEAN and AIPA.

PM Phuc briefed his host on the outcomes of his meeting with President U Win Myint and the talks with State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi.

He asked the two legislative bodies to work hand in hand to supervise the implementation of the signed cooperation agreements, including the action prorgamme for implementing the Vietnam-Myanmar comprehensive cooperative partnership for 2019-2024, signed on December 17.

He also called on the two legislatures to support mechanisms, policies and legal regulations to bolster the two countries’ trade and investment ties.

The Vietnamese Government chief also called for the Myanmar parliament’s closer coordination with Vietnam when it serves as ASEAN Chair and AIPA Chair next year.
