With fashion outlets across Hanoi preparing for the upcoming Black Friday sales, there is growing concern among retailers that consumers seem to lack enthusiasm for this year’s promotion due to the impact of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) epidemic.

Cau Giay district is a hub for fashion stores in the capital. Banners showcase the discounts available on Black Friday, an event which falls on November 27 this year, in order to attract customers.

Promotional schemes offer attractive discounts of up to 50%.

Even some store owners after offering between 70% and 80% off products.

The launch of the sales this year doesn’t seem to excite customers.

The majority of store owners note that footfall is similar to this time last year, with many shops hiring more staff, although the mood is quite different this year.

Fashion stores remain quiet even at midday which is considered to be the peak time for sales.

Staff have free time during the day which is quite different from the busy atmosphere seen last year.

Thuy Dung, a shop owner on Pham Ngoc Thach street, says the COVID-19 epidemic has altered the habits of customers, with many consumers following the trend of spending more economically.

A quiet atmosphere has descended on many commercial centres.

Many stores welcome customers, but few make a purchase.
