During the talks, the two Deputy PMs showed their elation at the development of bilateral ties across multiple fields and affirmed their determination to continue giving the highest priority to fostering the great relationship between the two nations.
They agreed upon the need to effectively carry out reached agreements and the outcomes of the 41st meeting of the Vietnam-Laos Inter-Governmental Committee, and the importance of sharing information and experience, especially experience in Party building, preparations for Party congresses, economic development and settlement of macro-economic difficulties.
They reached a consensus on coordination for the organization of events to mark both countries’ major anniversaries in 2020, including the 130th birthday of President Ho Chi Minh, the 100th birthday of President Kaysone Phomvihane, the 75th National Day of Vietnam and the 45th National Day of Laos.
The Lao Deputy PM pledged to continue instructing Lao forces to boost closer cooperation with their Vietnamese counterparts to stop all attempts of sabotage by hostile forces, particularly in border areas, and to combat transnational crime, especially drug crime.
Deputy PM Binh assured Vietnam’s readiness to share with Laos experience in law building and help Laos enhance the capacity of its justice officials.
Both sides were highly appreciative of the significant progress in bilateral economic ties, citing a 12.6% increase in bilateral trade to US$936 million in the first 10 months of this year.
They consented to expedite the implementation of the two countries’ agreements on trade and border trade while mapping out plans to revise those two deals to meet requirements in the new situation.
The two Deputy PMs highlighted border trade as an important factor to improve socio-economic conditions and maintain security and stability in border localities.
Deputy PM Binh thanked Laos for continuing to facilitate investment activities by Vietnamese enterprises in Laos, helping Vietnam retain its third position among foreign investors in Laos with more than 400 projects worth US$4.22 billion.
The two Deputy PMs also discussed measures to step up cooperation in labour, auditing, religious and ethnic matters, inspection and corruption prevention.
The Lao Deputy PM voiced his nation’s support Vietnam when the nation serves as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council in 2020-2021 and ASEAN Chair in 2020.
He said his nation backs the ASEAN’s common stance on the common security issues of the region, including the East Sea issue and the Mekong River’s water resource.
The same day, Deputy PM Binh paid a courtesy call to National Assembly Chairwoman Pany Yathotou, during which the top Lao legislator stated the Lao NA will offer favourable conditions for the two Governments to augment cooperation across the fields.
The Lao NA will also enhance the supervision of key joint projects of Vietnam and Laos, including the project on building a new building for the Lao NA, she said.
The Vietnamese Deputy PM affirmed that he will continue to work on issues of shared concern, such as increasing Vietnamese investment in Laos and dealing with issues relating to free migration, unregistered marriages and nationality in line with the agreement signed between the two governments.
Later, Deputy PM Binh visited the construction site of the new Lao NA building and held a meeting with the project’s management board on the progress of the project to examine ways to finalize the building by the end of next year as schedule.
