Growth in volume and revenue

In the first quarter of 2025, the number of international passenger arrivals to Viet Nam reached approximately 11.7 million, an increase of 13.3% year-on-year. Domestic travellers exceeded 9 million, rising by 3.6%.

Following the strong recovery momentum, the Viet Nam Airlines Group (including Viet Nam Airlines, VASCO, and Pacific Airlines) is estimated to have transported nearly 6.2 million passengers, with Viet Nam Airlines alone carrying over 6 million, a year-on-year increase of 6.7% and 6.5% respectively.

All international markets saw positive growth, with India recording the highest increase, by 26.6%, followed by the Middle East (25.8%) and Northeast Asia (13.6%), thanks to the recovery of China, Taiwan and Hong Kong (China).

The quality of international passengers also improved significantly, especially in high-revenue markets such as Japan, Australia, and India. High-revenue visitors from Japan have recovered to nearly 90% compared to the same period in 2019, instead of 60% compared to the same period last year.

Viet Nam Airlines’ consolidated revenue in the first quarter of 2025 was approximately 31,107 billion VND, with a pre-tax profit of nearly 3,625 billion VND. The parent company, Viet Nam Airlines, recorded 25,019 billion VND in revenue and nearly 3,044 billion VND in pre-tax profit.

Favourable fuel price developments

Viet Nam Airlines benefited from average fuel prices remaining at around 91 USD per barrel during the first quarter of 2025, nearly 5% lower than the average price last year and much lower than forecast, thereby improving cost efficiency.

In addition to passenger transport, cargo operations also posted positive results, with revenue in the first three months of 2025 exceeding the planned target by over 220 billion VND, making a notable contribution to profit growth.

In the context of Pratt & Whitney’s engine recall, Viet Nam Airlines proactively adjusted its flight schedules and optimised operating slots. Aircraft operating rates rose by nearly 10% year-on-year, significantly improving operational efficiency.

Viet Nam Airlines also ensured stable domestic network operations by allocating flight schedules appropriately and maximising resources during the peak international season. Additionally, it leased three aircraft for the Tet holiday, directly contributing 37.3 billion VND to business efficiency.

Expanding international cooperation

Apart from its robust business results, Viet Nam Airlines implemented several key activities in the first quarter of 2025 to strengthen its brand positioning in both domestic and global markets.

In the field of financial cooperation, the airline signed a Memorandum of Understanding, worth 560 million USD, with Citibank, signed a comprehensive cooperation agreement with Vietcombank, and an agreement with VNPT to deploy in-flight Internet connectivity (IFC) for its Airbus A350 fleet, marking a new milestone in enhancing the passenger experience.

Viet Nam Airlines actively improves passenger experiences and is committed to delivering service quality on par with global airlines.

In the international market, Viet Nam Airlines has continuously launched and reinstated several key routes, including Ha Noi–Bengaluru, with preparations underway for a Ha Noi–Hyderabad route and the reopening of several Northeast Asia routes.

The carrier also officially put into operation the Boeing 787-9 aircraft with the “Lac” Bird logo, promoting the image of Viet Nam to the world and celebrating its 30th anniversary. At the same time, Viet Nam Airlines became the first carrier to operate from Tan Son Nhat Airport’s new Terminal 3, further enhancing the passenger experience.

Viet Nam Airlines is also the first airline in Viet Nam to implement a full-scale biometric and electronic identification process (VNeID) for flight procedures, combining biometric technology with digital ID verification to improve passenger experience and promote digital transformation.

In the first quarter of 2025, Viet Nam Airlines continued winning many prestigious awards: “Asia’s Leading Airline for Cultural Identity” and “Best In-flight Service in Viet Nam” from the World Travel Awards; its first inclusion in the “Top 25 Safest Airlines in the World” and “Top 25 Best Airlines in the World” voted by AirlineRatings.com; and it continued to be honored with the "World's Best Value Premium Economy" award for the second consecutive time.

Create momentum for further development

The strong business result in the first quarter of 2025 provides a solid foundation for Viet Nam Airlines to effectively implement its 2025 production and business plan. In the second quarter, the airline has ramped up resources to serve peak travel periods of the April 30 –May 1 holiday and the summer season, while flexibly managing its network to optimise costs and boost revenue.

It is also developing capacity plans for peak periods, preparing to lease additional aircraft, and continuing to operate and expand key international routes, diversifying its network, and affirming its position in the global market.

In parallel with its operational activities, Viet Nam Airlines is accelerating the implementation of key projects at Long Thanh International Airport according to the progress required by the Government, while restructuring assets and optimising its financial investment portfolio to increase income, improve cash flow, and pursue sustainable development.
