The group and local authorities had a working session last Wednesday on the project - the Mekong Resort Town, which is expected to span Chau Thanh and Chau Thanh A districts of former Hau Giang province, now Chau Thanh, Dong Phuoc, Phu Huu, and Thanh Hoa communes of Can Tho city.
Can Tho, Hau Giang and Soc Trang were recently merged to form the new Can Tho city.
The Mekong Resort Town is one of Hau Giang’s planned key projects. The province has tapped Vingroup to draft a master plan before considering the group's proposal. The project is scheduled for completion by 2030.
It is initially slated for a total investment of $6.2 billion, with a projected population of 300,000 and capacity to host 10,000 tourists daily. The project will feature a water park, a theme park with thrill rides, a food street, a floating market, a Mekong museum, a 36-hole golf course, a nursing center, and orchards.
At the meeting, Vingroup provided updates on the master plan and outlined tasks to accelerate tendering and investor selection.
Can Tho Chairman Tran Van Lau emphasized that the project is essential for providing recreational and tourism facilities for residents, attracting international visitors, and supporting local socio-economic development.
He stressed that the implementation must be meticulous and fully compliant with the law, safeguard residents’ rights, and ensure balanced land-use planning across the city.
According to the Can Tho Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the city welcomed over 4 million visitors in H1/2025, reaching 61.6% of the year's target.
Overnight stays totaled 2.3 million, fulfiling 68.2% of the year's plan. Total tourism revenue exceeded VND4 trillion ($151.8 million), achieving 62.09% of the year’s target, the city’s news portal reported.
