Vietnam’s scholars are ready for study success in Australia

The 55 awardees, drawn by central and provincial governments, NGOs, academic institutions, and the private sector, will undertake studies in a range of areas that support Vietnam’s long-term development. These include natural resource management, entrepreneurship, gender equality, disability inclusion, and vocational education management.

This year, the scholarships included ten students under the Mekong-Australia Partnership – a regional initiative by Australia to support Mekong countries with common challenges. These scholars will have access to additional enrichment activities that will equip them with the skills needed to contribute to Vietnam’s emerging regional challenges.

Australia’s Ambassador to Vietnam, HE Robyn Mudie said, “We will continue to support Vietnam to build its skills and capacity. These scholarship students are future leaders who will strengthen the Australia-Vietnam partnership and will contribute to addressing local and regional challenges well into the future.”

Deputy director-general of the International Cooperation Department, Ministry of Education and Training, Nguyen Tien Dung added, “I would like to thank Australia for its generous scholarship programme and for working closely with us to ensure the programme meets Vietnam’s development goals. I would also like to take this opportunity to congratulate the departing awardees for their excellent achievements so far. I strongly believe that the new knowledge and skills they acquire at Australian universities will help them to play an active role in addressing the social and economic development challenges in Vietnam when they return.”

Australia Awards 2022 recipient Sung My Yen – from the H'Mong ethnic group in Ha Giang province – will study for a Master of Tourism, Environmental, and Cultural Heritage at the University of Tasmania in Australia.

She said, “I am grateful for the support provided by the programme, not only during the application process but also in preparation for my studies and life in Australia. I am honoured to have received this prestigious scholarship to study how Australia promotes sustainable tourism. I will definitely come back with useful knowledge and skills to contribute to the tourism industry in Vietnam.”

Australia is recognised as a leader in world-class education. There were nearly 25,000 Vietnamese students studying in Australia in 2021 and an estimated 70,000 Australian alumni in Vietnam. This network represents a wealth of knowledge, expertise, and influence, with many graduates becoming leaders in their respective fields and making valuable contributions to Vietnam’s development.

Applications for the Australia Awards for study in 2023 are currently being assessed and successful recipients will be announced in August.

Since 1974, Australia has supported over 6,000 Vietnamese to build their skills through the Australia Awards Scholarship initiative.
