Vietnam’s total value of imports and exports of goods in August reached $109.7 billion, down 0.1% compared to the previous month, but up 31.7% compared to the same period last year, according to data released by the National Statistics Office on September 3.

For the first eight months of 2026, the total import-export turnover reached $770.14 billion — the highest level ever recorded for this period — an increase of 28.7% year-on-year; exports rose 22.4%, while imports grew 35.3%.

In the eight-monh period, export turnover reached $374.84 billion, up 22.4% compared to the same period last year. Of this, the domestic economic sector contributed $74.47 billion (up 7.4%), accounting for 19.9% of total exports; the foreign-invested sector (including crude oil) contributed $300.37 billion (up 26.9%), accounting for 80.1%.

During this period, 33 export items achieved turnover above $1 billion each, representing 93.6% of the total export turnover. Seven of these items exceeded $10 billion each, accounting for 70.0%.

By product group, processed industrial goods reached $337.99 billion (90.2% of the export turnover); agricultural and forestry products $26.65 billion (7.1%); seafood $8 billion (2.1%); and fuels and minerals  $2.2 billion (0.6%).

For imports, total turnover in the first eight months of 2026 reached $395.3 billion, up 35.3% year-on-year. The domestic sector accounted for $105.07 billion (up 23.7%), representing nearly 26.6 percent of the total import turnover; while the foreign-invested sector reached $290.23 billion (up 40.1%), representing over 73.4 percent of the total.

There were 43 imported items valued above $1 billion each, representing 93.9% of the total imports. Among them,  three items exceeded $10 billion each, accounting for 55.5%.

By product group, production inputs reached $372.04 billion (94.1% of imports), of which machinery, equipment, tools, and spare parts accounted for 57.6%, and raw/energy/material inputs accounted for 36.5%. Consumer goods reached $23.26 billion (5.9%).

In the first eight months of 2026, the US remained Vietnam's top export destination, reaching $122.0 billion, while China was the largest source of imports at $161.9 billion.
