During an online meeting of the UN Security Council (UNSC) to discuss a report compiled by the UN High Commissioner for Refugees on June 18, the Vietnamese diplomat put forward a detailed approach to the refugee issue. The proposal outlines the need to prevent and settle conflicts, promote economic development, whilst simultaneously advocating peace and security as sustainable solutions.
He asked all parties concerned to co-ordinate efforts in an attempt to achieve long-term ceasefires and create a favourable environment towards achieving political solutions to conflicts.
Ambassador Quy underscored the humane significance of resolving the refugee problem, calling for greater use of dialogues among relevant countries as a means of ensuring the success of the repatriation and reintegration process for refugees.
He hailed the Global Compact on Refugees and the Global Refugee Forum, two establishments that have made over 800 commitments to the cause to date.
The Vietnamese diplomat affirmed the country’s commitment and efforts to unite with the international community in support of the settlement regarding the global refugee situation whilst implementing the Global Compact on Refugees.
In his address, UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi stated that there were 79.5 million refugees worldwide in 2019, the highest levels seen during the past decade.
He urged all countries to make greater efforts to seek and carry out sustainable solutions to the issue, in which he emphasized the necessity of building and maintaining peace, in addition to upholding political commitments to effectively implement the Global Refugee Agreement.
Representatives from various UNSC member nations stressed the need to promote a mechanism to share the burden of supporting refugees. They also called for greater international co-operation at bilateral, regional, and global levels, along with comprehensive solutions to this ongoing issue.
