Vietnam is promoting renewable energy to protect the environment

This is one of the directions of the prime minister to realise Vietnam’s commitments at COP26.

According to Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Hong Dien, Vietnam needs considerable international support in terms of concessional capital to take measures for concurrently ensuring national energy security and achieving net zero emissions by 2050.

Vietnam also wishes to receive technical assistance from developed countries to reduce the development of coal-fired power plants, control greenhouse gas emissions in the industry and trade sector, and improve the country’s capacity for implementing carbon evaluation mechanisms under the Paris Agreement on climate change, as well as enhance its capacity to carry out a competitive electricity retail market.

Dienmade the statement at a meeting on February 14 with British Minister Alok Kumar Sharma, president of COP26, who is now on a working visit to Vietnam.

After COP26 in the UK last November, under the Prime Minister’s directions, the MoIT has been working to update the draft of the upcoming Power Development Plan VIII to reduce coal-fired power generation and strongly develop gas-fired power, especially with liquefied natural gas, to guarantee energy security and increase the capacity from renewable energy sources.
