During a monthly teleconference among the UNSC held on June 16 to discuss the situation in Syria, Ambassador Quy urged all parties to respond to the ceasefire appeal issued by the UN Secretary General and his Special Envoy.
The Vietnamese Ambassador also urged all sides to maintain security stability as a pathway to facilitating talks in the hope of finding a political solution to Syria’s issues.
He expressed concerns relating to socio-economic challenges, the serious humanitarian crisis occurring, and the impact of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) on Syrian people.
Speaking at the event, Special Envoy of the UN Secretary General for Syria Geir Pedersen noted that up to 80% of all Syrian people are now living below the poverty line and 9.3 million of their citizens lack food. Moreover, the environment and infrastructure in the Middle Eastern country have also been seriously damaged after undergoing a decade of conflict.
Special Envoy Pedersen reiterated an appeal for a national ceasefire in order to make way for the search for political solutions in line with the UNSC’s Resolution No.2254.
This should be done in addition to a settlement for humanitarian issues in the face of new challenges arising from the COVID-19, with special attention being given to refugees and those have been forced to leave their residences.
As Syria enters the 10th year of instability and conflict, one of the most serious humanitarian crises in the world remains ongoing, with hundreds of thousands of people injured and millions of others losing their homes.
