Viet Nam targets to have nearly 9,000 km of expressways by late 2050

In particular, the Eastern North–South Expressway, running from Lang Son to Ca Mau, will have a total length of 2,065 km, while the Western North–South Expressway will span 1,205 km. 

The network includes 14 expressways in the northern region (2,242 km), 11 in the central and Central Highlands regions (1,353 km), and the rest of 11 highways in the southern region, with a combined length of 1,342 km.

In Ha Noi region, by 2050, there will be three ring roads with a total length of approximately 417 km while Ho Chi Minh City will have two ring roads with a total length of about 299 km.

Regarding the national road system, there will be 172 roads with a combined length of approximately 28,614 km. Among them, the North–South longitudinal axis comprises National Highway 1, with a length of about 2,218 km, and the Ho Chi Minh Road, with a length of around 1,894 km.

The Ministry of Construction said that the land area required for the development of the road transport system under the master plan is estimated at more than 200,000 hectares.

The required investment capital is estimated at more than VND 3.2 quadrillion (US$128 billion), to be mobilized from the State budget, Government bonds, ODA loans, non-State budget capital, and other lawful funding sources.

By the end of 2025, the country will have 3,803 km of expressways (including 3,345 km of main routes and 458 km of connecting roads), exceeding the target of 3,000 km. This marks a major breakthrough compared with the 2001–2010 period (89 km) and the 2011–2020 period (1,163 km).

In particular, over the past five years, the transport sector has completed approximately 2,000 km of expressways—nearly double the total achieved in the preceding decade./.
