5G will serve as a socio-economic multiplier for Vietnam

The talk show will take place at VIR’s studio from 9 to 11am on April 4 and will be livestreamed on baodautu.vn and vir.com.vn.

The event will see the participation of representatives from businesses and policymakers. Invited are Nguyen Hoa Cuong, vice president of the Central Institute of Economic Management; Tran Tuan Anh, director of Policy Division at the Vietnam Telecommunications Authority under the Ministry of Information and Communications (MIC); Denis Brunetti, president of Ericsson Vietnam, Myanmar, Cambodia, and Laos; and Nguyen Thanh Son, founder and chairman of MVV Academy.

The talk show will focus on the readiness of Vietnam for the commercialisation of 5G as well as the necessary conditions for a successful 5G commercialisation, along with Vietnam’s priorities for its digital transformation and implied business opportunities and challenges.

5G is transforming business worldwide. With commercial consumer-based 5G networks already live around the globe, the next wave of 5G expansion will allow businesses of all types to reap the benefits of enhanced mobility, flexibility, reliability, and security.

Vietnam is considered one of the frontrunners in 5G development alongside the US, China, and Japan, having licensed various trials during 2020-2021. The 5G network was tested by Viettel, VNPT, and MobiFone in 16 provinces and cities with half a million subscribers.

5G is expected to play a fundamental role by increasing broadband connections and improving rural coverage thus bridging the digital divide and increasing the contribution of digital communications to Vietnam’s GDP. A key component of Vietnam’s socio-economic development strategy is the digital economy, which is expected to contribute 7 per cent of GDP in 2025 and 7.5 per cent by 2030.

The MIC set the target of licensing 5G commercialisation in 2022 and expanding its coverage in urban areas and high-tech industrial zones.

To enable the successful 5G commercialisation, many issues should be dealt with. According to experts, Vietnam needs to ensure key factors such as enough broadband, matured 5G technology, and the diversification of 5G services, as well as varied terminal devices.
