Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh cut the ribbon to open the Thai Binh 2 thermal power plant in the northern of Thai Binh province on April 27.
Covering just over 131 hectares in Thai Thuy district, the plant has a designed capacity of 1,200MW, the largest capacity in the northern region.
The plant combines two generators that will supply 7.2 billion kWh of electricity to the national grid, and it expects to earn an estimated annual revenue of VND18 trillion ($767 million).
The project will contribute to ensuring energy security in the northern region and the country as a whole, especially during the upcoming summer months, when a shortage of electricity is common in some areas.
Thai Binh 2 Thermal Power Plant is an important component of Thai Binh Power Center. The plant was designed with two units with a total capacity of 1,200MW, invested by PetroVietnam. The plant is located in the south My Loc commune, Thai Thuy district, about 20 km to the east of Thai Binh city.
PetroVietnam Construction JSC (PVC) is the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contractor with a $1.2 billion contract.
Construction started in 2011 with operations expected to start in 2020, but the project was delayed by the pandemic.
