The Swiss Party of Labour held a ceremony on September 21 to celebrate 75th anniversary of Vietnam’s National Day.

 Addressing the event, Vietnamese Ambassador to Switzerland Le Linh Lan recalled the country’s significant milestones since President Ho Chi Minh read the Declaration of Independence of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam, now the Socialist Republic of Vietnam on September 2, 1945.

 She also laid stress on highlights in the Vietnam-Switzerland cooperation ties since they set up diplomatic relations in 1971, saying the ties have grown up across areas from politics to economics and cooperation for development.

 She expressed her gratitude and thanked the Swiss Party of Labour for organising this ceremony, saying it is important to deepen traditional friendship and solidarity between the two peoples.

 Honorary Chairwoman of the Swiss Party of Labour Anjuska Weil told Vietnam News Agency correspondents in Geneva that Vietnam has grown in stature as a prosperous nation in the region and the world.

 She said that the Communist Party of Vietnam and the Swiss Party of Labour have enjoyed sound relations, solidarity and friendship.

 Regarding the Vietnamese Government’s efforts in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, Weil said she was impressed by the country’s good control of the disease, and hoped that due attention will continue to be paid to poor and vulnerable people.

 On the occasion, the Vietnamese Embassy in Switzerland presented medical masks to the Swiss Party of Labour, supporting the party to cope with the COVID-19 pandemic.

Ambassador Lan underscored Vietnam’s efforts to protect its citizens amidst the ongoing outbreak, saying the country documented 1,068 COVID-19 cases, including 35 deaths, and saw no new cases in 19 consecutive days.

 Due to the global economic recession, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) cut economic growth forecast for Vietnam to 1.8 percent in 2020. However, the bank still hailed Vietnam as one of the best performers in the world thanks to the government’s success in controlling the spread of COVID-19, and among the first countries to fully reopen its domestic economy, Lan said.
