Capital Follows Confidence

Today, South Korea stands as Vietnam’s largest cumulative foreign investor, with over US$95 billion in registered capital spread across more than 10,400 active projects. This capital presence has deep real-world impact, supporting around 10,000 Korean enterprises operating on the ground in Vietnam and generating over 900,000 local jobs. Furthermore, these Korean-invested enterprises now drive close to 30% of Vietnam’s total exports. Bilateral trade between the two nations stands near US$95 billion, and both governments have officially set their sights on reaching US$150 billion by 2030.

Behind these macroeconomic figures are household names that have become part of Vietnam’s industrial fabric. Samsung has invested over US$23 billion and employs some 90,000 workers. LG’s investments exceed US$8 billion, anchored by its US$5.65 billion display complex in Hai Phong. Hyosung has committed US$4 billion and pledged an additional US$4 billion. Meanwhile, SK is exploring energy investments in central Vietnam, followed by Lotte, CJ, Doosan, and hundreds of supply chain partners.

The sectors benefiting from this synergy read like a blueprint of Vietnam’s industrial ascent: electronics, displays, textiles, petrochemicals, logistics, retail, finance, and increasingly, clean energy and digital infrastructure.

When Korean CEOs ask me about the market, my message is simple: Capital follows confidence, and confidence follows consistency. Vietnam has consistently delivered macro stability, open trade through over 17 free trade agreements, and a workforce whose skills elevate with every wave of investment. HSBC Global Research notes that Vietnam consistently attracts foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows well above 4% of GDP—among the highest in ASEAN—while remaining one of Asia's fastest-growing economies.

From Assembly Lines to Laboratories

The most compelling chapter of this story is not what has already been built, but what comes next. Korean investment in Vietnam is moving decisively up the value chain—transitioning from assembly to advanced manufacturing, and from production to research and development.

Samsung’s US$220 million R&D center in Hanoi—its largest in Southeast Asia—employs thousands of Vietnamese engineers advancing AI, software, and next-generation devices. As higher-value FDI flows into the country, it elevates local capabilities, accelerates domestic supplier integration, and fosters high-level engineering skills. Vietnam has already passed the milestone of producing two billion smartphones. Now, the country is transitioning from assembling technology to helping invent it.

The next decade of Korea-Vietnam cooperation will be defined as much by laboratories as by assembly lines.

Aligning Corporate Strategy with National Vision

This shift aligns corporate strategy with national policy. Vietnam’s Resolution 10-NQ/TW on developing the foreign-invested sector offers a clear signal to international investors. Resolution 10 targets higher-value FDI, aims to integrate 10,000 domestic enterprises into global supply chains, and seeks to attract leading multinationals to establish R&D centers in Vietnam.

Look closely at those policy priorities and you will see the Korean investment model reflected back: technology transfer, supplier localization, R&D integration, and workforce upskilling. Korean firms have practiced this approach in Vietnam for nearly two decades, already integrating hundreds of Vietnamese suppliers into their global networks. The high-value FDI Vietnam seeks is precisely the investment Korea is prepared to deliver, with newly registered Korean capital rising over 30% year-on-year in early 2026.

An Invitation to Co-Create

For Korean investors, Vietnam offers scale, talent, and policy momentum. For Vietnam, high-value Korean investment offers technology transfer and the fastest route from "Made in Vietnam" to "Designed and Engineered with Vietnam."

Nearly two decades ago, a single factory in Bac Ninh contributed to transform the economic landscape. Today, Vietnam stands at another inflection point: evolving from an FDI destination to an innovation partner, and from the workshop of Asia to its laboratory.

That initial handshake in Bac Ninh laid the foundation for a US$95 billion economic relationship. The next handshake will be worth far more—measured not only in trade volume, but in patents, engineers, and shared prosperity.
