Phu Yen is developing its maritime economy, forming a large general seaport at Vung Ro and utilising Bai Goc’s logistics as a gateway to the sea for the Central Highlands region.

Phu Yen takes on logistics infrastructure investment

According to the province, investment in Bai Goc Port and Hoa Tam Industrial Park (IP) are the core goals of the Southern Phu Yen Economic Zone (EZ), playing an important role in the province’s socioeconomic development, and especially marine economic development.

This is also Phu Yen province’s advantage in strengthening links between regions and localities in the development process, especially between southern Phu Yen and northern Khanh Hoa towards the Central Highlands.

Bai Goc port has a specialised berth to receive ships of up to 250,000 tonnes and a general port to receive ships of up to 50,000 tonnes. It has an area of 220 hectares and is the port closest to international maritime routes.

Ta Anh Tuan, Chairman of Phu Yen People’s Committee, noted that the province has completed site clearance of 134ha for Bai Goc port. “Not only is there a general port, but also specific ports for steel plants, oil refineries, liquid and gas cargo, and logistics areas,” Tuan said.

The land and water site of Bai Goc port area is now cleared and ready to call for investors. Next week, the People’s Committee will hand over an investment MoU for the Bai Goc port project to Hoa Phat Group for managing and developing.

Bai Goc port has attracted attention from many corporations. It is one of four areas proposed by Hoa Phat Group to invest in the Phu Yen Southern EZ, which it announced last year. Next month, the People’s Committee is expeced to approve Hoa Phat’s involvement in Bai Goc port with investment of around $675 million.

According to Phu Yen’s provincial planning, the locality will develop logistics centres associated with Tuy Hoa airport, Vung Ro port, Bai Goc port, and Dong Hoa inland container depot port. It will also form logistics centres associated with large urban areas of the province and IPs in the area.

By 2030, Phu Yen will develop Dong Hoa Logistics Centre, Tuy Hoa Western Logistics Centre, and Song Cau Logistics Centre.

In addition to Bai Goc port, Vo Dinh Tien, director of the Phu Yen Department of Planning and Investment, informed that the locality is calling for investment in five projects in transportation, seaports, and logistics.

“Two projects in Tuy Hoa city include upgrading and expanding Tuy Hoa airport to build more passenger terminals, civil aviation areas, and expand the aircraft apron to increase capacity to 3 million passengers per year by 2030,” Tien added.

Meanwhile, the Tuy Hoa city Logistics Centre project aims to become a focal point for gathering and transshipping goods from the Central Highlands provinces by road and sea.

Two other projects in Dong Hoa town include Vung Ro wharf, with the goal of upgrading and expanding its scale to receive general ships of up to 20,000 tonnes and liquid/gas cargo up to 10,000 tonnes; and a logistics centre project in Dong Hoa associated with the dry port for the operations of both Vung Ro and Bai Goc ports.
