Some of Vietnam’s most important routes pass through Phu Yen province

At a conference with the government and local authorities summarising 2023 in January, Secretary of Phu Yen Party Committee Pham Dai Duong said that the province will continue to concentrate on infrastructure investment, including both hard and soft infrastructure, and social transport infrastructure.

“Phu Yen will implement strong solutions to quickly overcome limitations and speed up construction progress and disbursement of public capital, as well as strengthen financial and state budget disciplines and manage state budget revenues,” Secretary Duong stressed. “A focus is placed on good implementation of planning management. Specifically, Phu Yen will concentrate on strengthening regional links, especially sub-regions.”

According to local reports, in 2023 Phu Yen achieved many positive results, with 16 of 17 key targets being achieved and exceeding the planning issued by Phu Yen People’s Council. The economic growth rate increased by 9.16 per cent, 1.16 per cent higher than the proposed plan, with the strong recovery of production and business activities as well as development of tourism and service activities.

Deo Ca and Cu Mong tunnels, opened in recent years, have broken the isolated status of Phu Yen and opened the door to trade. They have also connected the South Phu Yen Economic Zone (EZ) and Van Phong EZ in the neighbouring province of Khanh Hoa, as well as nearby industrial and tourist areas in the region.

In addition to that, the Phu Yen coastal road has deployed construction of the section through the South Phu Yen EZ, also opening up regional links in economic development.

According to Nguyen Phuong Dong, director of Phu Yen Department of Transport, the completion and putting into use of more bridges, roads, and transport infrastructure has contributed positively to connecting regions, industrial parks, clusters, and seaports for the socioeconomic development of the province.

“Phu Yen continues to set the goal of completing investment in an infrastructure system that includes modern seaports and airports, while the highway connects conveniently with provinces in the region and the whole country,” Dong said.

In particular, the North-South Expressway eastern section runs about 92km through the province and is currently under construction, while Phu Yen-Dak Lak Expressway will be about 100km long and is expected to be completed after 2030.

Phu Yen is also a locality with high potential for waterway transportation due to its 189km-long coastline, while the development potential of Tuy Hoa Airport is huge as Tuy Hoa city is only 5km southeast of the airport.

According to Phu Yen’s planning towards 2030, approved at the end of 2023, Tuy Hoa Airport is to be upgraded to serve three million passengers per year, and could see as much as five million passengers passing through annually when required.

Dong of Phu Yen Department of Transport said, “Such efforts create new advantages for blooming connection between the regions to engage strong economic motivation to the central coast regions via the whole country.”

In the next 3-4 years, the whole province will boast more than 90km of highways. Along with improvements in connecting infrastructure, national transport infrastructure projects in the coming time will bring great opportunities for Phu Yen to connect with dynamic economic regions nationwide, and even with other countries in ASEAN by road.

“This is an opportunity for Phu Yen to attract large-scale investors, forming development along the value chain,” Dong added.
