Antonio Guterres made that above statement while receiving Ambassador, Head of Viet Nam's permanent delegation to the UN Dang Hoang Giang on February 25 in New York, the U.S.
The UN Secretary-General underscored that Viet Nam is a trusted partner of the UN, highly appraising the nation's capacity of performing important roles at UN agencies, including a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council during 2020-2021 tenure and taking part in UN peacekeeping activities.
For his part, Dang vowed to work hard in enhancing the practical and effective contributions of Viet Nam to the international community, particularly in realizing the Sustainable Development Goals, adapting to climate change and maintaining international peace, as well as contributing to discussions on future cooperation orientations of the UN, such as the Our Common Agenda (OCA).
He expressed his hope to closely coordinate with UN agencies in fostering collaboration between Viet Nam and ASEAN with the UN.
On the occasion of the 45th anniversary of Viet Nam's joining the UN (September 9, 1977), the Ambassador conveyed President Nguyen Xuan Phuc's invitation to UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres to visit Viet Nam at the soonest time.
Before his latest appointment, Dang was Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs, beginning in March 2021, and also served as Chairman of the Viet Nam National Commission for the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
Between 2012 and 2016, he was Deputy Chief and then Chief of Cabinet in the Ministry for Foreign Affairs and was appointed as Assistant Minister for Foreign Affairs.
From 2010 to 2012, Dang was Assistant Director-General in the Department of International Organizations, Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He was appointed as Assistant to the First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and later Assistant to the Minister of Foreign Affairs.
Mr. Dang began his career in 2000 at the Department of International Law and Treaties, Ministry of Foreign Affairs. From 2005 to 2007 and again in 2009, he was assigned to the Permanent Mission of Viet Nam to the United Nations in New York. In his second term there, in 2009, he was assigned First Secretary and Political Coordinator of Viet Nam at the United Nations Security Council.
