As many as 894 border guards in Tay Ninh Province, which neighbors Cambodia, will be administered with the Covid-19 vaccine by the end of April.
The first 100 officers on Thursday received their first shot of the AstraZeneca vaccine developed by the British-Swedish company in collaboration with Oxford University at Ho Chi Minh City Military 175 Hospital.
Each vaccination site serves to inject a maximum 100 individuals per session to ensure thorough health screening and medical history registration.
Colonel Nguyen Huu My, vice head of the Department of Military Medicine, said the inoculation drive is part of 20,000 vaccine doses allocated to the Ministry of National Defense, which gives priority to frontline forces, including border guards.
Tay Ninh Province, which neighbors HCMC, shares a 240 kilometer border with Cambodia with 129 checkpoints.
Border guards in five other provinces Binh Phuoc, Long An, An Giang, Dong Thap and Kien Giang on the border with Cambodia where a new Covid-19 outbreak is worsening are expected to be administered with the Covid-19 vaccine soon.
Cambodia has so far recorded over 2,500 Covid-19 cases, with 16 deaths. While it is one of the few countries in Asia to not suffer severely from the pandemic, the number of new cases in the country has risen quickly since the end of February, when outbreaks involving Chinese groups in Phnom Penh were detected.
Recently, Vietnam had detected a series of people passing along unmanned paths to avoid being quarantined. Last month, the country recorded four Covid-19 cases, being illegal entrants from Cambodia.
