A man in central Vietnam was sentenced to two years suspended sentence after buying a 250 kilo tiger carcass to make bone glue. 

A court in Ha Tinh Province on Friday handed the sentence to Dinh Nhat Nghe, 49, who resides in the province's Huong Son District for "violations of regulations on the protection of wild animals."

Tiger is listed as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. The animal is threatened mainly by poaching and habitat destruction.

According to the verdict, Nghe bought a tiger carcass of 250 kilos from a person in Nghe An Province that borders Ha Tinh in early January to produce tiger bone glue for sale.

After three weeks of investigation, police inspected his home and found the carcass.

Nghe was entitled to leniency since his family has a record of meritorious services to the nation and he himself had made many contributions to rural development in this hometown, activities to prevent Covid-19 and natural disasters.

His sentence comes with four-year probation.

In several rural areas across Ha Tinh, locals have the tendency of buying animal carcasses like tigers and monkeys to make bone glue, believed to treat bone and joint-related ailments.

100 grams of tiger bone glue cost around VND18 million ($780) while 100 grams of monkey bone glue VND400,000-500,000.
