A number of major Japanese media outlets, including national broadcaster NHK, Asahi newspaper, and newswire Jiji Press, have outlined that they expect Vietnam to enjoy further growth and success following the 13th National Party Congress.

The great success of the 13th National Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) led to various Japanese media groups featuring an array of news and articles on the closing session in February. Many picked up on Nguyen Phu Trong being re-elected as Party General Secretary and his sustained efforts to step up anti-corruption drives.

Japanese national broadcaster NHK reported that the 13th National Party Congress saw Vietnam adopt fresh policies aimed at boosting national development and electing new leadership members.

At a press conference held following the conclusion of the congress, General Secretary Trong said that the nation may face complicated challenges and unpredictable risks over the next five years, however, he expected the unity of the entire population to overcome these challenges. The Party chief therefore pledged to improve on the achievements recorded in the fight against corruption and efforts to effectively control the spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

Over the subsequent five years, the country will strive to maintain economic growth of between 6.5% to 7%, the Party leader added.

The Asahi newspaper also highlighted the political event’s closing ceremony, emphasising that in the next term the nation’s primary focus will be on combating corruption, slowing the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic, and ensuring socio- economic development throughout the pandemic.

Newswire Jiji Press reported that General Secretary Trong received great support from many Party members due to his efforts in successfully directing tasks of maintaining high-economic growth whilst simultaneously bringing the epidemic under effective control.

Asano Katsuhito, former Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary of Japan, stated that the 13th National Party Congress selected worthy leaders, including those he hopes to play an active role in advancing the country’s development moving forward.

With regard to the future of Vietnamese relations with Japan, Asano Katsuhito affirmed that mutual ties have enjoyed steady growth over many decades with an emphasis on forging sound relations for the purpose of mutual benefits.

Despite the pandemic situation expected to remain complicated in 2021, both nations should conduct high-level exchange visits as a way of reaffirming the positive relationship between the two countries moving into the new period, he added.
