Ken Hu, Huawei’s rotating chairman, has spoken about Huawei’s nonstop innovations for a greener and more intelligent world

This is a statement by Kevin Zhang, CMO of Huawei’s ICT Infrastructure Business at the 19^th annual Huawei Global Analyst Summit 2022 held in Shenzhen on April 27. Zhang noted that digitalisation and decarbonisation reinforce each other and jointly drive green development. He believes that ICT will be the key to both processes.

At the event, Huawei introduced three future innovation initiatives in order to contribute to building a greener and smarter world.

Giving a keynote speech on innovating nonstop and advancing the industry in terms of connectivity, computing, cloud services, and devices, Ken Hu, Huawei's rotating chairman insisted, "We will strengthen our approach to innovation, equip all industries to go digital and intelligent, and help build a low-carbon world."

Dr. Zhou Hong, president of Huawei's Institute of Strategic Research added, "Everything we imagine today is very likely to be too conservative for tomorrow. We must meet the future with bold hypotheses and a vision and throw caution to the wind as we push to break through bottlenecks in theory and technology. This is the only way forward."

Nonstop innovation for a greener and smarter world

In terms of connectivity, the company announced its vision to enable 10 Gbps connections everywhere with 5.5G and F5.5G, the next evolutions in wireless and fixed networks. Their vision for F5.5G – the next evolution of the fixed broadband network – has the goal to increase bandwidth, coverage, and network experience by more than ten times. They are looking forward to further drive the advance of the connectivity sector.

Together, these will support a broader range of niche network requirements, including a more immersive experience in homes as well as the low latency and high reliability needed for industrial control scenarios. In just two years, Huawei has already developed and verified many of its key components.

In terms of computing, Huawei is working on redefining system architectures for individual nodes, foundational software, and data centres in an effort to significantly increase system performance and energy efficiency.

Hu estimated that “By 2030, global demand for general-purpose computing power will increase tenfold, and demand for AI computing power will increase by a factor of 500.”

Due to this leap, Huawei's team is working to redefine computing architectures to break through existing barriers in computing performance and efficiency.

Huawei's cloud services have been developing rapidly over the past few years, and there have been all kinds of innovative applications launched, including cloud services for software development, data governance, and AI development.

The digital and physical worlds will continue to converge at an increasingly rapid rate, so moving forward there will be even greater demand for quality digital content. Understanding that, Huawei introduced MetaStudio, which is an end-to-end pipeline for developing digital content.

Hu shared that “With MetaStudio, the entire content production process will be brought to the cloud, from compositing to editing, modelling, and animation itself, allowing content creators to collaborate seamlessly from anywhere in the world.”

This will shorten the movie production cycle from years to months, as film production will take only two weeks to render a 90-minute 3D movie instead of six months.

Despite the decline in Huawei’s device business over the past two years due to a lack of chips, Huawei’s rotating chairman admitted that the challenge gave them the opportunity to rethink their device business and how they can provide consumers with greater value.

By understanding that consumers are now looking for a more intelligent experience instead of more devices, Huawei now focuses on a user-centric Seamless AI Life experience.

At the end of last year, Huawei introduced the Watch D, a medical-grade smartwatch that allows users to monitor their blood pressure and oxygen levels, and even generate ECGs. Personal health data can be uploaded to the cloud, analysed, and reported to healthcare providers in order to regularly monitor vital signs and manage chronic conditions.

Huawei is working with evermore ecosystem partners to deliver a brand-new experience across different scenarios, through all sorts of devices, and with a growing number of powerful cloud services. The company is focusing on five major domains: smart offices, fitness and health, smart homes, easy travel, and entertainment.

From Huawei’s perspective, innovation is all about creating value for customers and society. Looking into the future, it has stated two major trends with all industries going digital and the world setting its sights on low-carbon development.

Continuous digital transformation to create new value for customers

Huawei is adapting its product portfolio to different industrial sectors. It will start pre-integrating and pre-verifying products, doing all the complex work beforehand to make digital transformation easier for its customers and partners. With Huawei Cloud as the foundation, it aims to provide everything as a service, turning infrastructure, technology, and expertise into cloud-based services and making cloud migration easier for customers in different industries.

Huawei is also building integrated teams that focus on specific industries, bringing a specialised group of experts closer to customers' business challenges and more tightly incorporating products and capabilities from partners. The goal is to provide targeted digital transformation solutions for each industry and respond more rapidly to customer needs.

Optimising power supply and consumption with digital technology to enable low-carbon development

Huawei is redefining the photovoltaic sector with AI, cloud, and other capabilities to boost the generation of renewable energy. The company is also developing system-level low-carbon solutions for green ICT infrastructure, focusing on wireless base stations and data centres.

Moving forward, Huawei is taking steps to boost its business resilience and ensure steady development.

"We have to keep the ball rolling through nonstop innovation, creating value for customers and society. We look forward to working more closely with our customers and partners to build a greener and more intelligent world," said Hu.

In addition to its innovation strategy, Huawei also shared its far-reaching vision for the future and some of the exploration it is doing to get there.
