Two mobile vaccination vans are at the Le Van Thinh Hospital in Binh Trung Tay Ward in Thu Duc City. There are two teams with two vans each that are administering the vaccines. One van carries six to eight medical staff including doctors, nurses and drivers and the other is used for emergencies.

"Previously, medical staff would go to fixed points and residents would gather there to wait for injections. Now, mobile trucks will move to isolated areas or locked down neighborhoods to inoculate residents," said doctor Tran Van Khanh, director of the hospital, a member of the organizing committee of the mobile vaccination program.

The van used for emergency has a stretcher, a medicine cabinet and a fire extinguisher. It will be used to transfer people with severe symptoms after vaccination to nearby hospitals.

Minh, the van’s driver, places an oxygen tank in its dedicated spot.

Around 8 a.m. doctors and nurses get ready to leave. Each team will go to about seven locations in Thu Duc City every day, administering doses to more than 200 people.

At 8:30 a.m., the van arrives at an quarantine area in the dormitory of the University of Culture in Phuoc Long A Ward, 10 km from Le Van Thinh Hospital. After getting off the vehicle, medical staff quickly put on their protective suits before beginning to administer the vaccine doses.

Eligible people at the quarantine facility, including militiamen, security guards and drivers on duty await their turn to get vaccinated.

Two militiamen undergo health screening before getting injected.

"Previously, we (medical staff) went to fixed points and returned to the hospital after completing the task. Now after finishing at one place, we have to move to another. So it is more tiring," said doctor Le Thanh Thao as she injecting a militiaman.

However, the mobile injection will help limit travel and prevent crowds amid social distancing order, Thao added.

Vo Toan Thang, a 21-year-old militiaman, receives his second shot.

HCMC, epicenter of the ongoing wave, will receive about 13.8 million doses of Covid vaccines this year, ensuring 99 percent of people over 18 are inoculated. In August alone, the city is expected to get around five million doses. So far, at least 1.5 million residents in the city with more than 7.2 million people 18 years or older have received at least one shot of the Covid-19 vaccine.
