VOV.VN - In response to the World Environment Day and Action Month for Environment 2019, the Hanoi Department of Natural Resources and Environment has requested that all relevant departments and agencies organise grassroots activities in order to raise public awareness about environmental protection.

According to the Hanoi Department of Natural Resources and Environment, a wide range of activities will take place across the capital from May 20 to July 31 while posters and banners that spread information on natural resources and environment protection will go on display in public places and offices. 

The department will also step up efforts to inspect and supervise projects that have a high risk of causing environmental pollution and request localities to limit their use of honeycomb coal stoves or the burning of straw along with improving air quality, actively preventing natural calamities, and adapting to climate change. 

Le Tuan Dinh, deputy director of the Hanoi Department of Natural Resources and Environment, said the city has also been proactive in attracting investment that uses environmentally-friendly technologies, in addition to not granting licenses to projects that cannot ensure the required level of environmental standards.

Furthermore, waste treatment systems should be installed at industrial parks and clusters to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and mitigate the effects of climate change as per the nation’s commitments to the international community, said Mr Dinh. 

To protect the environment and reduce air pollution, Hanoi has been actively co-ordinating with international development organisations, donors, and embassies to share experiences of devising solutions that lead to cleaner air and a greener city. 

Moreover, the city has hosted contests and forums for students, families, and the wider community to seek initiatives that encourage environmental protection and raise awareness about the necessity of improving air quality in order to build sustainable urban areas. 

On June 1, the Hanoi Department of Natural Resources and Environment will work in collaboration with Live&Learn and the Hoan Kiem district People’s Committee to organise a festival on pedestrian streets nearby Hoan Kiem lake. 

The event is expected to raise public awareness on the impact of air pollution, put on an array of interesting activities, and propose solutions that could lead towards a greener Hanoi in the future. 

To mark the occasion, Hanoi will also hold an international forum that will see four major regional cities take part. Representatives from Hanoi, Beijing, Bangkok, and Seoul will engage with each other to share their experience and successful lessons on deploying solutions that improve air quality.
