Pork price increases cause difficulties for small traders and citizens

The DPM requested the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, the Ministry of Industry and Trade, the Ministry of Finance, and the provincial and local people’s committees to follow the developments in pork prices, supply, and demand and to take action where necessary.

They are also asked to strictly control cross-border exports, prevent speculation, strictly fine any violations, and report issues to the prime minister for consideration.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development is asked to work with cities, provinces, and relevant agencies to develop production, better control diseases, and develop breeding animals in a sustainable manner.

The Ministry of Industry and Trade is tasked to work with the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development to check the distribution network, suppliers, slaughterhouses, retailers, and wholesalers.

The government official also asked them to point out shortcomings and propose solutions.

The Ministry of Finance has to closely work with cities, provinces, and relevant agencies to collect information about market prices and report them to the prime minister while proposing possible solutions.

The General Statistics Office will work with relevant agencies to assess the possible effects of pork prices on the consumer price index and work on solutions to curb it in line with the target set by the National Assembly and the government.

Over the last two weeks, retail pork prices in many traditional markets soared. In some, they rose by about
VND20,000 ($0.87) per kilo compared to last month.

The situation is blamed on strong increases in the price of animal feed and African swine fever, which have caused a fall in supply.
