Moving into the opening weeks of the year, Dien ornamental pomelos can be seen on display in Lac Long Quan street in Hanoi as a means of meeting the demands of customers in the buildup to the upcoming Lunar New Year, known locally as Tet.

An array of bonsai pomelos, worth approximately VND50 million each, amaze people who visit the street.

According to a local pomelo grower Nguyen Kim Thang, his family are taking care of roughly 100 ornamental pomelos.

Thang describes how in recent days many customers have arrived to place orders.

Featuring a unique fragrance and taste, Dien pomelo represents a specialty of Hanoi.

Thang stresses that ornamental pomelo trees require more attention and care than normal shrubbery.

Farmers are careful to take care of the grapefruit roots before they deliver them to local markets throughout the capital.

A small ornamental pomelo tree stands between 60cm and 80cm tall, while a large one is can be up to two metres in height.

The typical selling price of an ornamental pomelo tree ranges from VND15 million to VND50 million, depending on its size.

According to Thang, customers tend to spend less this year due to the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
