In 2024, Vietnam recorded a trade deficit of 9.7 million USD from Myanmar, of which Vietnam’s export value reached 282 million USD, down 35.5% year-on-year; while the import value was 291 million USD, up 16.3% YoY. Earlier in 2023, Vietnam had a trade surplus with Myanmar of 187 million USD.

Regarding exports, in 2024, 18 out of 19 main items that Vietnam exported to the Myanmar market decreased in value compared to the same period last year. Textile and footwear materials and accessories were the only items that had export value increase of 19.1% YoY, reaching 41.7 million USD. In contrast, textiles and garments decreased by 14.8% YoY to 32.1 million USD; fertilizers decreased by 7.6% YoY to 24.1 million USD; paper and paper products down by 5.9% YoY to 15.8 million USD... Some Vietnamese exports to Myanmar of high export turnover recorded a sharp decrease in 2024, including plastic products with -54.2% YoY to 20.1 million USD; iron and steel products with -56.8% YoY to 12.3 million USD; electric wires and cables with -33.9% YoY to 10.1 million USD...
In the agricultural product group, Vietnamese coffee exports to Myanmar decreased by 44.5% YoY to 10.7 million USD; pepper down by 93.6% YoY, reaching 0.05 million USD... In 2024, Vietnam also earned 54.1 million USD from exporting other goods to Myanmar, down 33.7% compared to the previous year. The specific items were not announced by the General Department of Vietnam Customs.
Regarding imports, Vietnam imported 8 main items from Myanmar with vegetables and fruits being the largest imported from this market, valued at 138 million USD, up 34.6% compared to the previous year and accounting for 47% of the import turnover from this market. Rubber was the second largest import from Myanmar worth 19 million USD, 95 times higher than the 0.2 million USD from the previous year. The amount of imported rubber increased from 134 tonnes (in 2023) to 11,282 tonnes (in 2024), up by 84 times. The following large import items included ores and other minerals with 10.4 million USD, down 42.5% YoY; computers, electronic products and components with 7.2 million USD, down 47.4% YoY. Vietnam spent 4 million USD on importing seafood from this market, down 39.3% YoY; and 1.4 million USD on import of other base metals, down 51.7% YoY.
In the agricultural group, Vietnam imported corn with 0.54 million USD, down 95.6% YoY; wood and wooden products with 0.62 million USD, down 43.6% YoY. Vietnam also spent 110.2 million USD for import of other goods from Myanmar, up 18.4% YoY, which were not announced by the General Department of Vietnam Customs.
