Representatives of the Hau Giang province People's Committee took part in a meeting alongside Finnish Ambassador to Vietnam Kari Kahiluoto and Finnish businesses on December 11 as a means of seeking future investment opportunities and assessing the impact of climate change in the Mekong Delta province of Hau Giang.

 During the meeting, Lu Van Hung, Secretary of Hau Giang Provincial Party Committee, said the co-operation relationship that exists between Vietnam and Finland has enjoyed plenty of success across various fields such as economics, culture, and education.

Hung expressed his hope that Ambassador Kahiluoto will act as a bridge to gain further investment from Finnish enterprises in areas such as socio-economic development, e-government, smart city building, high-tech green energy, and renewable energy.

In turn, Ambassador Kahiluoto extended his gratitude to the province for their interest in technology, as well as their support of Finnish firms exploring investment opportunities, noting that both nations enjoy a time-honoured relationship through various co-operation programs.

With regard to the impact of climate change in Hau Giang, the Finnish diplomat stated that the Scandinavian country pays close attention to the region surrounding the Mekong river and the effects that climate change has on the area, adding that Finland is hoping to seek co-operation opportunities to solve the consequences caused by climate change.

The Finnish Ambassador said that several businesses from the European nation enjoy advantages in terms of renewable energy, high-tech agriculture, garbage treatment, and electricity, meaning that there exists huge potential for co-operation with the province in the future.

Truong Canh Tuyen, Vice Chairman of the Hau Giang People's Committee, said climate change is currently causing river bank erosion and saline intrusion which has had a profound affect on agricultural production and the daily lives of people in the province. In recent times, the province has been active in building seasonal dams as a means of minimising the impact of saline intrusion.
