The 316-hectare domestic airport in Gio Linh District, expected to cost VND4.4 trillion ($190 million), would be built as a public-private partnership (PPP).

It will have a capacity of one million passengers a year and handle 3,100 tons of goods.

Provincial authorities have estimated the cost of site clearance at VND250 billion. This sum will be taken from the provincial budget. Compensation payments are expected to be completed this year so that the project can start construction soon.

Infrastructure conglomerate T&T Group and property company FLC Group have expressed their interest in investing in the airport.

People seeking to travel to Quang Tri have to fly into Thua Thien-Hue or Quang Binh Province, both some 100 km away.

Quang Tri is one of several provinces and cities that are clamoring for their own airport, including the northern province of Ninh Binh, the central province of Ha Tinh and the southern province of Ba Ria-Vung Tau.

Vietnam has 22 civilian airports at present, 10 of them international.
