The central province of Nghe An held a ceremony in Hanoi on May 22 to mark the launch of a series of billboards which promote round-the-clock free service on the ‘111’ hotline for victims of human trafficking.

The event was jointly held by the British Embassy in Vietnam and the Vietnamese Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs.

Accordingly, an array of billboards are to be erected in seven districts throughout Nghe An province, including in Dien Chau, Yen Thanh, Nghi Loc, Hung Nguyen, Cua Lo, Tuong Duong, and Con Cuong between March and June.

As of March, the British Embassy in Hanoi, in conjunction with associated partners, has been striving to implement a campaign to raise public awareness about human trafficking, alongside the support of Miss Universe Vietnam 2017 H’hen Nie.

“Taking action against modern slavery and human trafficking continues to be a priority for the UK government. A prominent part of our collaboration is reaching out to vulnerable communities to raise awareness on the dangers of human trafficking”,  said British Ambassador to Vietnam Gareth Ward.

“Traffickers may promise you the earth but they are not your friends. So be aware of the risks and don’t become a victim”, the British diplomat added.

In support of the campaign, H’hen Nie, Miss Universe Vietnam 2017, elaborated by saying, “Coming from an ethnic group in Vietnam, where many people especially girls are vulnerable to human trafficking, I hold this issue very close to my heart. I hope that people will be aware that each of us should be equipped with knowledge to prevent ourselves and our loved ones from falling into the traps of human traffickers.”

Human trafficking is a global issue that requires a united approach in order to be effectively tackled. The UK Government therefore acknowledges the importance of international co-operation in countering this threat and will continue to enhance its partnership with Vietnam in order to tackle this serious crime.
