The matter was discussed at a meeting between Standing Deputy Chairman of Quang Tri People's Committee Ha Sy Dong and the investors on April 11.
At the meeting, Dong asked EGAT to approve proposed solutions swiftly to avoid ongoing damage to both parties, in particular Quang Tri itself, as the province had already completed the land clearance and construction of residential areas before EGAT announced its decision to terminate the project.
Furthermore, the province asked the investors to issue an official document about the cancellation, detailing what work the province had done for the project. This is to provide the province with the basis to develop alternative plans for the plot of land in a report to the government.
Last October, the Thai Ministry of Energy announced it would stop work on the long-delayed 1,320MW thermal power plant project. It was suggested at the time that the Vietnamese Ministry of Industry and Trade continue to create favourable conditions for the company in the province for the future. There may be further opportunities to invest in other renewable energy projects or infrastructure in Quang Tri or Vietnam in general.
The project’s investors were granted an investment certificate in 2013, but the project failed to be implemented. The plant was planned to be built on an area of 450 hectares in Dong Nam Economic Zone in the central province.
