The hospital is the country’s third to use the AI technology in examination and treatment, after the Phu Tho General Hospital in the northern province of Phu Tho and Hanoi-based K Hospital.

These hospitals are using the IBM Watson for Oncology software developed by U.S. company IBM.

Speaking at the seminar on AI applications in cancer treatment, Tran Quy Tuong, director of the Information Technology Department under the Health Ministry, said that after the test period, the Ministry of Health set up an evaluation board for the Watson for Oncology software in medical treatment in Vietnam.

The board concluded that the software contributed to the improvement in performance in cancer treatment. As a result, the board encouraged hospitals to adopt it.

The technology assists oncologists in offering treatment options based on medical records to increase the efficiency of diagnosis and treatment.

Further, the software technology also supports oncologists in treating 13 types of cancer, including breast, lung, large intestine, rectum, stomach, ovary and liver, among other organs.

The use of AI in health care and treatment has become popular throughout the world, improving the quality and effectiveness of treatment, minimizing medical risks and easing workloads in many hospitals.

A representative of IBM Watson Health from IBM said that the firm would cooperate with the Ministry of Health and Five9 Vietnam, which is implementing IBM Watson for Oncology in the country, in research and development, and putting in place AI solutions to healthcare.
